Trump Fires Back At Obama's Attempt To Meddle With A New SCOTUS Justice Pick
Since last Friday it seems every Dem has thrown in their two cents on why Trump should hold off on picking the replacement for Ginsberg. Dems want Biden to pick as they are hoping Trump will lose this fall. That's all there really is to it. They have all sorts of excuses for why, but it's all B.S., they just don't want another conservative Justice. So of course former President Obama came out of the woodwork to explain that Trump should wait since there is precedence stating that during an election year you wait until after the election to choose. Trump saw this and let Obama know how he feels about his "advice."
"Four and a half years ago, when Republicans refused to hold a hearing or an up-or-down vote on Merrick Garland, they invented the principle that the Senate shouldn’t fill an open seat on the Supreme Court before a new president was sworn in.
A basic principle of the law — and of everyday fairness — is that we apply rules with consistency, and not based on what's convenient or advantageous in the moment. The rule of law, the legitimacy of our courts, the fundamental workings of our democracy all depend on that basic principle. As votes are already being cast in this election, Republican Senators are now called to apply that standard."
Trump was questioned about what Obama said on the South Lawn of the White House.
"Sir, President Obama’s pick in 2016, Merrick Garland, didn’t get a chance to move forward. That was an election year. Why should your pick get a chance to move forward in an election year?
THE PRESIDENT: Well, that’s called “the consequences of losing an election.” He lost the election. He didn’t have the votes. When you lose elections, sometimes things don’t work out well."
Obama couldn't get by the Senate and Congress at the time, so he lost his chance to pick a Supreme Court Justice. That's all there is to it. There is no precedent set here. Dems wouldn't back off the chance to pick a Supreme Court Justice if they had the majority in the Senate and Congress. So really this is just some hot air that Obama is pushing in hopes to America that Trump would be wrong to do his job in picking a replacement for Ginsberg.
