Dem Senators Jump To Take Advantage Of Corona Outbreak
Dems have been searching for a reason to stop the appointment of Amy Coney Barrett. Apparently, they haven't found themselves a Christine Blasey Ford for Barrett yet. So they have been feeling hopeless because Barrett is going to get through regardless of their feelings. But now with the Corona Virus infecting a few Senators and the president, they are thinking they have their scapegoat they need to at least postpone the appointment.
Schumer teamed up with Feinstein and released a statement Friday claiming Senator Lindsey was wrong to push forward.
“It is premature for Chairman Graham to commit to a hearing schedule when we do not know the full extent of potential exposure stemming from the president’s infection and before the White House puts in place a contact tracing plan to prevent further spread of the disease. The unfortunate news about the infection of our colleague Senator Mike Lee makes even more clear that health and safety must guide the schedule for all Senate activities, including hearings.
In addition, there is bipartisan agreement that a virtual confirmation hearing for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench is not an acceptable substitute. All circuit court nominees have appeared in person during the pandemic, and there is far more at stake for the American people with this Supreme Court nomination, including the Affordable Care Act being struck down and more than 7 million COVID survivors being denied health coverage. It’s critical that Chairman Graham put the health of senators, the nominee, and staff first - and ensure a full and fair hearing that is not rushed, not truncated, and not virtual. Otherwise this already illegitimate process will become a dangerous one.”
Senator Schumer further criticized McConnell's decision to move forward on Saturday
"The decision to recess the Senate for two weeks after at least three Republican Senators have tested positive for COVID-19 makes clear that the Senate cannot proceed with business as usual as the virus continues to run rampant," Schumer said. "If it's too dangerous to have the Senate in session, it is also too dangerous for committee hearings to continue."
"Leader McConnell and Chairman Graham's monomaniacal drive to confirm Judge Barrett at all costs needlessly threatens the health and safety of Senators, staff, and all those who work in the Capitol complex," he continued. "Their decision to move 'full steam ahead' with a Supreme Court nominee who could take away the healthcare of 20 million Americans a month before Election Day is turning an illegitimate process into a reckless and dangerous one."
It's funny that a virtual hearing is somehow not appropriate. Are Senators somehow unable to ask questions in the same way judges have been? This just shows you how desperate the Dems are grasping at straws like this in an effort to stop the inevitable.
