Dems are upset about the Amy Coney Barrett appointment. They fear that she is going to immediately overturn Roe v Wade and every other liberal ruling. So Dems have been doing everything in their power to stall the inevitable. Schumer went as far as to claim that he plans to derail the Senate, hoping to delay the appointment. He even talked about boycotting the vote. But Republicans knew Dems were going to pull something so they pulled a stunt of their own to thwart the Dems.
“The vote to recommend Barrett be confirmed to the Supreme Court was scheduled for 1 pm but, after learning that Democrats on the panel planned to boycott the hearing in, moved up the vote to 9 am. Barrett’s nomination was passed out of committee on a party-line vote, 12-0.
Typically, a Democrat boycott might have forced the Judiciary Committee out of session, since it prevented the formation of a quorum, but Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-CA), allowed for a last-minute rule change, giving Republicans the power to pass Barrett out of committee on a simple majority vote.
Democrats, instead, were limited to just one show of force against the vote: large photos of individuals they claim will be detrimentally affected if Barrett votes to eliminate the Affordable Care Act, one possible — but unlikely — outcome of a case the Supreme Court will hear in early November challenging the ACA’s constitutionality.”
“But their absence Thursday didn’t change the outcome since Republicans hold the majority. Senate Judiciary Chairman Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., held the vote anyway by waiving committee rules that require at least two members of the minority to be present to transact business.
Barrett was approved: 12 yeas, to 10 Democrats not present. A vote in the full Senate is expected Monday.
“This hearing was anything but fair,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. “… Republicans broke committee rules, but in many ways even worse than that, they broke their word.”
I am sure Dems are even angrier now that Barrett has moved passed the Judiciary committee onto a full Senate vote. At the rate this is going she should be appointed well before the election.
