Mitch McConnell Let’s Us Know How The Senate Will Vote On National Emergency Measure

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel made a statement that the Senate is going to vote in favor of blocking the national emergency declaration.

While Mitch himself is siding with the President on the matter, this isn’t the route he wished it would go.

According to USA Today,

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hoped President Donald Trump wouldn’t declare a national emergency over border security, but said Monday that he was “obviously” unsuccessful in arguing against the move.

The Senate is likely to pass a resolution to block Trump’s emergency declaration, McConnell told reporters in Louisville.

“I think what is clear in the Senate is there will be enough votes to pass the resolution of disapproval, which will then be vetoed by the president,” he said. ” And then, in all likelihood, the veto will be upheld in the House.”

McConnell said he had hoped Trump “would not take the national emergency route.”

“Once you decide to do that, I said I would support it, but I was hoping he wouldn’t take that particular path,”  he said.

Last week, the House of Representatives voted in support of blocking President Trump’s emergency declaration with a vote of 245-182 which included 13 Republicans as well.

Those 13 Republicans were, Justin Amash (Michigan), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pennsylvania), Mike Gallagher (Wisconsin), Jaime Herrera Beutler (Washington), Will Hurd (Texas), Dusty Johnson (South Dakota), Thomas Massie (Kentucky), Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Washington), Francis Rooney (Florida), Jim Sensenbrenner (Wisconsin), Elise Stefanik (New York), Fred Upton (Michigan), and Greg Walden (Oregon).

Over the weekend, Republican Senator from Kentucky Rand Paul stated that he will vote against the emergency declaration as well, siding with the Democrats.

In explaining why he can’t vote in favor of the declaration he said, “I can’t vote to give the president the power to spend money that hasn’t been appropriated by Congress. We may want more money for border security, but Congress didn’t authorize it. If we take away those checks and balances, it’s a dangerous thing.”

Like it or not, he’s right. It does become a dangerous thing. Yes, it kind of sucks because Americans want the wall and Democrats have been stopping that from happening because of their hatred for President Trump.

Rand Paul is not the only Republican who has said they’ll vote against the declaration. Republican Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Thom Tillis have all said they would vote against it as well.

If this is indeed the case, and all the Democrats vote against the declaration, then they’ll have enough votes to pass the measure.

What happens after this happens, I don’t really know. What I do know is that the wall is getting built, and that’s what really matters.
