The “Defund the Police” movement has done nothing but hinder the police’s ability to protect their communities. Liberal leaders foolishly cut budgets and turned their backs on the police. So now many cities are hurting as their crime rates skyrocket. Portland, Oregon was no different, they cut $15 million from their police department this past June. But that wasn’t enough for Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty who wanted to cut into the police budget further with an additional $18 million dollar budget cut. But luckily her attempt failed. Hardesty claimed that most 9-1-1 calls are unnecessary and then the audacity to call 9-1-1 for help.
It was of course a frivolous call, but still, when Hardesty needed someone she called on the one service that will always answer. Hardesty called 9-1-1 after her Lyft driver told her to get out. Hardesty and the driver were arguing over the windows and the driver had had enough so he decided to drop her off at the nearest service station. Hardesty refused to accept this and called 9-1-1…
“She called 911, telling the operator: “Well, I’ve got a Lyft driver that decided he would just drop me off at a filling station. Well, I’m not getting out of the car, in the dark, at a filling station, not happening. All because I asked him to put the window up. I’m not leaving.”
“I am not going to allow him to leave me on the side of the road. I paid for a ride and he says he canceled it, so I’m just going to sit here until he sends me another ride.”
The dispatcher explained that it’s Frost’s property, no crimes were committed, and only she can order another Lyft. Officers were sent to the scene.
Lyft currently recommends that drivers keep windows down while a passenger is in the car to ensure air circulation and mitigate the spread of coronavirus.
When asked why she would call emergency service for being dropped off at a gas station, she had the following response.
“I don’t call 911 lightly, but I certainly am not going to do anything that would put my personal safety at risk,” she added. “It’s a lot harder when you are Black or brown in America to make that decision … But I ultimately had very limited options.”
This is crazy. Hardesty was trying to cut $18 million from the police because she found them to be unnecessary and then has the gall to call them for help. Luckily the majority of the city council saw reason. But if Hardesty had had her way there is no telling as to how backed up the police would be and how many people would be left waiting in actually need of aid.
