Columbia University Offers Segregation For Graduations

Well, this is going in an odd direction… In order to be more inclusive, Columbia University is segregating its graduation ceremony by race and economic standing. AKA Columbia is segregating their graduation ceremonies. So what’s next are they going to be segregating bathrooms, water fountains, and creating special areas for certain people to sit? I feel like we had a whole social movement about this about 50 years ago…

Columbia put out a notice about the move:

“In honor of Columbia’s diverse student community and complementing the school- and University-wide graduation ceremonies, we are proud to also offer Multicultural Graduation Celebrations, which provide a more intimate setting for students who self-identify in a variety of ways. These events invite community members to reflect on personal growth and community experiences that have impacted their time as students through to graduation. All students are invited to participate in these celebrations.”

The Schedule so far:

  • Native Graduation: Sunday, April 25 at 4:00 p.m. EDT
  • Lavender Graduation (LGBTQIA+ community): Monday, April 26 at 4:00 p.m. EDT
  • Asian Graduation: Tuesday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m. EDT
  • FLI Graduation (First-generation and/or low-income community): Tuesday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m. EDT
  • Latinx Graduation: Thursday, April 29 at 6:00 p.m. EDT
  • Black Graduation: Friday, April 30 at 4:00 p.m. EDT

But I guess this is the new norm as many universities are doing separate graduations for Black people.

Hosting segregated graduation ceremonies is not necessarily a new idea. In 2017, Harvard University graduate students successfully made a push for a separate graduation ceremony for black students. By 2019, the idea had become mainstream, as more than 75 colleges reportedly hosted black-only ceremonies.”

This reminds me of the quote: “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

How is segregation somehow now ok? This is what schools are now doing and it is amazing that minorities are somehow now ok with this. This is wrong on multiple levels. It is divisive and encourages people to cluster in their cultural tribes which in turn hurts America. We should see each other as fellow Americans, not by ethnicities. We are divided enough when it comes to political views, we do not need to rekindle segregation in this country.
