Chinese Virologist Warns Corona Virus Is "Just The Tip Of The Iceberg"
Our economy is starting to show signs of life again as States reopen and we get back to work. But this virus may have just been the beginning when it comes to mass outbreaks. Chinese Virologist Zhengli claims unless we stop politicizing science we could be forced to do this all over again.
"Shi Zhengli, the deputy director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, who has been dubbed "bat-woman" due to her team's work on SARS-like coronaviruses in these animals, made the remarks on Monday in an interview with Chinese state TV station CGTN. The coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is believed to have originated in bats, with another animal thought to have acted as an intermediary host."
Shi said her team's 15 years of work on these pathogens has shown other coronaviruses could pose a threat to humans. "The deputy director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology said research into viruses needs scientists and governments to be transparent and cooperative, and that it is “very regrettable” when science is politicized."
“If we want to prevent human beings from suffering from the next infectious-disease outbreak, we must go in advance to learn of these unknown viruses carried by wild animals in nature and give early warnings,” Zhengli said..."
“If we don’t study [the viruses], there will possibly be another outbreak,” warned Shi..."
"Our original aim for international cooperation is to work together for human health around the world, because we know that there are no borders in the research of existing and emerging infectious diseases. Such work requires scientists from all over the world, and governments to be open, transparent and cooperative and work together to prevent and control some of these new infectious diseases," Shi said.
I guess Zhengli would know all about the Corona Virus as there are claims that this pandemic originated in her Wuhan lab. Hopefully, she is wrong and this pandemic is an outlier. I want to believe we have learned our lesson here and are going to up our funding for things like this so that we do not have to relive this lockdown with a far deadly virus.
