Toby Keith is one of those people that when you hear him talk about his love for this country that you know how much he really means it.
From a bittersweet birthday song for America and an “Old School” new single to a triumphant comeback for his home-state charity event and multiple prestigious honors, Toby Keith is getting back to business after some pandemic-induced downtime.
Keith’s latest 4th of July song, “Happy Birthday America,” will surely bring a tear to every patriot’s eye. It brought a tear to mine, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it brought a tear or two to yours, too.
By its title, one would expect a booming July 4th anthem, perfect to play at the BBQ or on the boat. It isn’t. “Seems like everybody’s pissin’ on the red, white, and blue,” sings Keith.“Happy birthday America whatever’s left of you.”
Here are the lyrics of “Happy Birthday America” by Country music legend Toby Keith:
Happy birthday America
It’s the 4th of July
I get to wake up in your freedom
But sometimes I wonder whySeems like everybody’s pissin’
On the red, white, and blue
Happy birthday America
Whatever’s left of youYou were the darlin’ when you saved the world
WW I and II
France would just be part of Germany now
If it hadn’t been for youNow your children want to turn you in
To something other than yourself
They burn your flag in their city streets
More than anybody elseHappy birthday America
It’s the 4th of July
I’ll get to wake up in your freedom
But sometimes I wonder whySeems like everybody’s pissin’
On the red, white, and blue
Happy birthday America
Whatever’s left of youWho they gonna count on
When you’re not there to take their call
Will the world keep right on spinnin’
Without the greatest of them allWithout the helping hand of God
Your days are numbered, my old friend
We’re sure gonna miss you, girl
You were the best that’s ever beenHappy birthday America
All the broken-down cities
By the left’s design
And the right can’t seem to get it right
Most of the timeEvery time I go to town and vote
I just come home with the blues
The lesser of two evils
All we ever get to chooseHappy birthday America
It’s the 4th of July
I’ll get to wake up in your freedom
But sometimes I wonder whySeems like everybody’s pissin’
On the red, white, and blue
Happy birthday America
Whatever’s left of youHappy birthday America
According to Keith, “Happy Birthday America” doesn’t fight for what makes our country great quite like some other patriotic songs. Instead, the poignant new single finds Keith examining the country’s condition as well as its citizens’ perception and what the world might look like without the United States.
Keith revealed that he was inspired to pen the song while watching a fireworks display on a boat last year, and one of his friends wished him a happy Fourth of July – to which he replied with, “Happy birthday, America. Whatever’s left of you.”
“It had been a screwed-up 18 months,” Keith reflected as he watched both parties’ concern over democracy’s end. He pondered on Charlie Daniels’ song that says, “God save us all from religion,” which made him realize that if we need God’s saving, it should be from politicians.
