A neonatal nurse has been accused of murdering seven premature babies and attempting to kill ten others in a UK hospital.

In a shocking case, 32-year-old nurse Lucy Letby is accused of murdering seven premature babies and attempting to kill ten more at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Letby allegedly targeted baby boys and girls between 2015 and 2016 and even threatened an infant boy’s life three times in a single day. Her year-long killing spree affected more than a dozen families, and Letby, a trained neonatal intensive care unit nurse, was known as a “constant malevolent presence” in the hospital’s children’s unit.

Letby is suspected of using her night shifts to harm babies, especially twins. The parents of the infants were less likely to visit overnight, which allowed Letby to carry out her heinous acts. Evidence shows that the nurse used different methods to hurt babies, including injecting them with insulin, air, and other fluids, and pumping them with milk through feeding tubes and veins. Letby was known to target twins, and in some cases, one twin was killed while the other survived.

The prosecution’s opening remarks in the Crown Court revealed that Letby often succeeded in killing babies who were not killed the first or even the second time she tried.

Nick Johnson KC said, “Sometimes they were injected with air- both intravenously [into the blood] and via the nasogastric tube [into the stomach]. Sometimes they were injected with milk or some other fluid. Sometimes it was insulin. But the constant presence was Lucy Letby.”

Letby has been charged with 22 counts related to 17 babies, both murder and attempted murder. She pleaded not guilty while in court, denying any wrongdoing. Johnson said that Letby violated protocol at the “closely restricted” neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Letby’s trial is expected to last six months.

The prosecution’s allegations state that Letby had a disturbing habit of harming babies under her care. The hospital, where she worked, had a duty of care to the children, but Letby allegedly violated that trust by causing harm to vulnerable infants.

The accused’s trial will decide her fate and provide answers to the families of the affected babies. The case has shocked the local community, and people want justice for the babies who lost their lives under Letby’s care.
