I seriously hate the internet sometimes. There are things that I see or read that make me lose faith in humanity because some of the things they come up with are just ridiculous. (Video Below – Warning: Graphic)
At first, I thought it was teenagers who come up with stuff like this, but no, indeed it is also adults. Now, people on the internet are forcing down several chunks of rotten uncooked meat in order to get HIGH. I swear, this is actually a thing happening and I am terrified for people’s lives.
According to IFLScience, the appalling diet trend encourages people to let raw meat rot for several months or even a year before eating it. Once adequately rancid, the decomposed raw meat (aka “high meat”) is consumed, and a supposedly euphoric, “high” feeling soon overtakes the person eating.
While some reportedly eat high meat for its alleged mind-altering effects, others actually say they prefer the taste of the rotten flesh, which IFLScience says “is often described as cheesy and more acidic than your average steak.”
According to an article published in IFL Science,
“Some people believe that cooking is overrated, instead preferring to snack on some hearty raw – sometimes rotten – meat. When we say rotten, it isn’t “left out overnight and gone bad” rotten; we are talking months or even years of decomposition, bacteria on the surface, completely different color rotten.”
Obviously, you don’t need to be a genius to understand that there’s a reason why most meats are cooked before they’re eaten. Anthropologists have observed how humans have been using fire to cook meat as far back as 300,000 to 400,000 years ago, and the practice has remained for a good reason – cooking with heat eliminates the presence of nasty bacteria which can cause plenty of unwanted problems like food poisoning.
The proponents of this new trend, however, think that there’s something to be gained from eating rotten meat, although where this sensation of elevated euphoria comes from is still not quite clear – it could be due to a chemical reaction caused by the abundance of bacteria, or the highs could also possibly stem from the after-effects of consuming rotten food, such as food poisoning and dehydration-induced delirium.
Harmful and even potentially deadly bacteria can flourish on decomposing meat, meaning if you were to consume it could end up in your gut and set you up for a really bad time.
According to IFL Science, some of those who have attempted to try ‘high meat’ has been left with seriously upset stomachs.
Welcoming bacteria such as salmonella and staphylococcus aureus into your body can also lead to hospitalization and in extreme cases even death.
I know it probably goes without saying, but please don’t try this at home, guys.
