When a motorcyclist suffered a near-fatal accident, doctors gave him only a 10 percent survival chance to pull through – and recommended that his wife unplug his life support. Instead, she decided to take matters into her own hands. And months later, her defiance turned into a miracle.
Back on July 11, 2011, life changed forever for newlyweds Matt and Danielle Davis. Matt was riding his motorcycle when he hit a car parked illegally on a lane.
At the hospital, after nine days of life support, Danielle was told the words no one should ever have to hear: “Your husband will probably not wake up”.
Yes, doctors gave Danielle grieved news that her husband had a 90% chance of never regaining consciousness, so they suggested taking him off life support.
But Danielle was not ready to give up and neither was Matt when he awoke from his coma three months later. Danielle took Matt home where she and her mom could care for him 24/7. Their love story and Matt’s will to live is truly inspiring.
“In July of 2011, my husband Matt Davis was in a motorcycle accident that left him with several broken bones and a severe traumatic brain Injury. He was 22 and we’d only been married for 7 months.”
Danielle gave up everything — just to take care of her husband.
“We didn’t really even have a chance to start our life together, and I didn’t want to give up,” said Danielle.
“If we’ve got to bring him home, let’s make sure he has the best view in the world,” Danielle told her mother. “If he’s going to be a body in a bed, let’s give him something to look at.”
Her refusal to give up hope would eventually be rewarded. After 3 months in a coma, the impossible happened: Matt opened his eyes!
She kept asking him and suddenly she heard his husband burst out: “I’m trying!”
Danielle couldn’t believe it: “It was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard!”
But the journey back to normal life was far from easy. Matt fought every day to get better, step by step. He had to re-learn everything from the beginning, even talking, standing, and walking.
According to AWM:
Matt continues to fight for full mobility and has not been able to regain his long-term memory. He doesn’t remember dating or marrying Danielle. But part of the reason for that was that the Christian couple had only been dating for two months when they decided to tie the knot. Then seven months later, he got into a crash.
Matt has advice for every husband out there and wants people to know how important it is for a man to take care of the woman he vowed to love and protect for the rest of his life.
“Dude, take the trash out because there might be a day when you can’t,”he said.
And yet some things have not changed.
“Matt’s personality is exactly the same. He is sarcastic and witty, funny and charming, and still so very sweet. He is not depressed or violent. He laughs, cries, and gets embarrassed. He shows all range of emotions.”
