She Had Just Given Birth To Quadruplets, Then She Saw Something That Totally Floored Her…
Bethani and Tim Webb of Hythe, Canada, had just been married a few months when they found out that Bethani was pregnant.
When they went for the first ultrasound, they received some shocking news: Bethani was, in fact, carrying identical quadruplets!
Although they thought there were no further surprises in store for them, Tim and Bethani were left flabbergasted the day that Bethani gave birth. After she had given birth, the couple and the doctor looking after them realized that the quadruplets were in fact even more extraordinary than they first realized...
The four girls: Abigail, Grace, Emily, and McKayla are what is known as "perfect quadruplets", in other words, they are completely identical. This occurs when just one of the mother's eggs is fertilized, which then splits into two, combining the chromosomes of the mother and the father.
While having quadruplets isn’t as shocking for a couple using fertility drugs, the chances of conceiving quadruplets naturally are nearly 1 in 800,000.
However, the statistics quickly rose when the four babies were born and found to be identical quadruplets. The chances of conceiving identical quadruplets are just 1 in 15 million. And the only way to know for sure is through a DNA test performed after the birth.
The girls were conceived naturally, which Bethani's nurse told her was a 1 in 67 million chance. They were delivered by Cesarean.
“Of course, I’m worried about her,” Tim said to Global News. “The day of, everything went fine. It was kind of like a magic show, because they’re pulling out one, two, three, four… It was kind of surreal.”
Following the births, Bethani recovered well from the surgery, while her precious baby girls were all kept in incubators in the NICU for a few days.
As for their names, the couple shared that having four girls meant they were lucky in that they didn't have to pick just one name they liked.
“We just decided,” Bethani said. “Found some we liked and picked them out. It was nice that we didn’t have to pick our favourites. We could just pick four we liked.”
Tim was just excited to make memories with his lovely little girls, while Bethani was looking forward to the crazy first few years looking after four little ones.
“They’re all doing really well,” Bethani told TODAY Parents. “They’re all good.”
