You won’t believe what Jessica Simpson is spilling in her forthcoming memoir. The pop star turned business mogul, who seemed to have everything going for her, shares the startling truth about hitting rock bottom. As we read about her life, we realize that it wasn’t as picture-perfect as it appeared on TV or in magazine spreads. The darkness lurking beneath the surface was her battle with addiction.
In her memoir, Simpson talks candidly about the day when everything spiraled out of control. Throughout the book, she opens up about her childhood sexual abuse, which contributed to her addiction to prescription pills and alcohol. It’s shocking to see how the glitz and glamour of her life hid these traumatic experiences and the personal demons she was fighting.
Simpson describes her worst day, when she began drinking at 7:30 am, realizing just how out of hand things had become. As a 39-year-old mother of three, she was “terrified of letting” her children see the reality of her struggles. She didn’t want them to view their mom as an addict and was too “ashamed to say” that on that Halloween, she had no recollection of how they got into their costumes.
That morning, Jessica joined her husband, Eric Johnson, at a school assembly for their daughter Maxwell. Despite being a superstar singer and running a billion-dollar clothing/lifestyle brand, she admits, “it was 7:30 in the morning, and I’d already had a drink.” She married Eric in 2014, and they have three children together, daughters Maxwell and Birdie, and son Ace.
After the assembly, Simpson began prepping for their Halloween party. As her team applied makeup and a fake beard for her Willie Nelson costume, she “zoned out.” When Eric checked on her, he found his wife completely intoxicated.
“I was terrified of letting them see me in that shape,” she wrote.
Once the Halloween party was over, Simpson took an Ambien to pass out and sleep.
“I slept in, afraid to see them, afraid I had failed them. I hid until they left, then drank.”
Simpson finally confided in close friends about her substance abuse, telling them, “I need to stop. Something’s got to stop. And if it’s alcohol that’s doing this and making things worse, then I quit.”
Not only did Jessica Simpson bravely confront her addictions, but she also disclosed the sexual abuse she endured as a child. She believes this trauma led her to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol.
At the age of six, a family friend sexually abused Simpson. She kept this secret from her parents until she was twelve.
“(It happened) when I shared a bed with the daughter of a family friend. It would start with tickling my back and then go into things that were extremely uncomfortable.”
She added, “I wanted to tell my parents. I was the victim, but somehow I felt in the wrong.”
Jessica Simpson’s story is a stark reminder that nobody’s life is perfect, even if it seems that way from the outside. It’s a testament to her resilience and courage that she’s opening up about her personal struggles, shedding light on the reality behind the glossy facade.
