A mother’s joyous honeymoon swiftly turned into a desperate fight against a merciless disease, revealing a resilience that stands as a testament to the indomitable human spirit.
During her honeymoon, Aimee Partridge discovered that what she thought were mere bruises on her daughter Brogan’s legs were indeed a foreboding sign of a deadly disease, meningitis. Days earlier, Brogan had been treated for an eye infection and was on a course of antibiotics, making this sudden revelation a terrifying and unexpected shock for the newly wedded couple.
Little Brogan, just seven years old at the time, was promptly rushed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Here, the gravity of her condition hit home, as doctors were left with no choice but to amputate her left foot to save her life. This heartrending decision was a sobering reminder of the seriousness of meningitis.
Reflecting on the horrifying ordeal, Aimee confessed, “It looked nothing like a rash, it looked more like bruising – at the time I never thought it was meningitis, and that’s the problem.” In Aimee’s eyes, the marks on her daughter’s body bore no resemblance to the textbook images of meningitis symptoms she had seen.
Speculation around whether Brogan’s initial conjunctivitis was a result of contracting meningitis first remains rife. “One thought we had was that maybe Brogan contracted meningitis first somehow, and that’s how she contracted conjunctivitis – because meningitis attacks the immune system and makes you more susceptible to other diseases – but we can’t be sure,” expressed Aimee. The stark realization that meningitis symptoms are not always apparent only underlines the critical importance of vigilance.
Hopes soared as Brogan, now wearing a prosthetic foot, began her journey towards recovery. However, life had another harsh blow in store. Her remaining leg, ravaged by infection, was constantly in pain. The infection had caused the main blood vessel in her leg to wither away, and the family was faced with another dreadful decision — whether to amputate her other leg as well.
In a united front, Aimee, her family, and the doctors decided that this drastic measure was in Brogan’s best interest. Aimee shared, “The remaining leg was 50/50 and it required major surgery, but she had a recurring infection in 2017. The infection has spread up to her knee, and the leg is just too weak and could put her at risk later in life if we keep it.”
Now nine, Brogan has become a symbol of resilience. Despite the unimaginable pain of facing yet another amputation, this brave young girl is not one to back down. Aimee believes that children’s capacity for adaptation could help Brogan accept this painful reality.
Aimee mused, “She knows the process, and it’s not nice, but children tend to adapt quickly to situations, and I think that’s what Brogan is going to do.” The decision to proceed with the amputation was not taken lightly. Despite the risks, they believe it to be their best option. As Brogan prepares to face a future without either of her feet, her courage is a testament to her indomitable spirit.
In a plea that every parent should heed, Aimee implores us to not ignore the warning signs of this dangerous disease. Through their harrowing journey, the Partridge family hopes to increase awareness about meningitis and its often-deceptive symptoms, turning their personal tragedy into a powerful message.
