Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has come up with another “brilliant” idea that proves just how of touch with reality she is. Chicago as Lightfoot put it has been in a state of lawlessness and the police are struggling to handle the “peaceful” protesters. Mayor Lightfoot seems to be less than helpful as she claims this kind of situation is unprecedented. So of course residents are looking for the nearest state that has at least semi-competent leadership as they see their State is falling into chaos. But Lightfoot has an idea that is sure to keep her constituents from leaving, she is thinking about raising property taxes…
“Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she couldn’t keep raising property taxes “off the table” as the city faces a budget shortfall and Chicago businesses struggle to recover from both looting and the coronavirus shutdown.
“I can’t take it off the table, but it is truly the last thing I want to do,” Lightfoot said at a press conference this week.
“Laying off city employees could be on the table too as the city faces an estimated budget shortfall of $700 million.
“We are hurting as a city: landlords, renters and workers. Our entire economy — the rug has been pulled out from under us because of the massive impact” that has affected every single business, the mayor said.”
“Every city in the country is dealing with a loss of revenue,” Chicago Deputy Mayor of Economic Development Samir Mayekar told FOX Business. “Cities, unlike the federal government, we have to balance our books. [Mayor Lightfoot] has two principles in mind … making sure that the most vulnerable populations of the city aren’t impacted. … She’s focused on making sure we’re not driving business out of the city.”
I get that her city is in turmoil and that they need to balance the budget but perhaps they should throw the idea of taxing residents off the table entirely as everyone has been affected by the lockdowns and now cities are taking the brunt of the damage when it comes to these protests. Maybe they should just fine the violent protesters as they seem to have no problem wrecking all of the law-abiding citizens property.
Tax the crap out of them, they like it. Look how they have voted for many years. That should be proof enough.

I don’t see anything inconsistent with the mayor’s plan. For a Democrat, raising taxes is THE solution for any and every problem. What surprises me is that she has even thought about it a little before doing it. She’s worried about businesses leaving the city-perhaps she should increase their taxes, as well. If she raises taxes high enough on both businesses and citizens, maybe they’ll all leave. Then, she will only have one problem-who the hell can pay her wages.
I wonder, if she was out in a lake, in a boat that was leaking water, such that it’s sinking was a likely situation, would she try to punch a hole in the bottom of the boat so that the water coming in, could go back out? That seems to be the way she thinks if she wants to raise taxes to keep people in the city. Obviously, intelligence and rational thinking are, to her, racist,and to be avoided at all cost.
I remember we had a drought about 12 years ago and the democrat controlled city council pleaded with the citizens to conserve water…I told them that they would raise the rates when it was over….well a year later the council raised the rates because the water department was crying that the citizens conserved so well that they had lost all profit and needed a rate increase to offset the loss…it has never been lowered either….lesson learned.

That is usually how they get that far behind in debt. 700 million is a lot of money that you have to ask where it went to? I would have their organization in Chicago audited to find out where the money went.
