Andrew Cuomo has been begging New Yorkers that fled the city during the pandemic to return. Cuomo’s poor management skills early on in the pandemic, caused many to hunker down in Connecticut and the Hamptons. Cuomo only recently realized that New York City’s top 1% were among the many who fled. After realizing that the “one percent” pays about 50% of New York’s taxes Cuomo finds himself at their mercy.
“Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been begging rich people to return to New York City from their second-home retreats so they can pay taxes to help offset the state’s growing coronavirus-related revenue shortfall,” the New York Post reported Tuesday.
During the early stages of the coronavirus epidemic, New York was one of the hardest-hit states, with 32,725 deaths thanks to Andrew Cuomo’s failure to contain the virus. New York has also had an overwhelming number of cases, they are at 418,255 as of August 6th.
“I literally talk to people all day long who are now in their Hamptons house who also lived here, or in their Hudson Valley house, or in their Connecticut weekend house, and I say, ‘You got to come back! We’ll go to dinner! I’ll buy you a drink! Come over, I’ll cook!’” Cuomo said at a press conference late Monday.
“They’re not coming back right now,” Cuomo added. “And you know what else they’re thinking? ‘If I stay there, I pay a lower income tax’ because they don’t pay the New York City surcharge.”
“Our population, 1 percent of the population pays 50 percent of the taxes,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo is trying to win back these wealthy New Yorker City residents but really doesn’t have much to offer. New York has higher taxes and high crime rates. Cuomo claims that he is going to make NYC safer, but we have all seen how he mismanaged COVID and DeBlasio is not helping by cutting the police budget by $1 Billion. If those were not reasons enough to stay away, progressive Dems are in the process of passing a wealth tax… So why would any wealthy person go back?
