The Senate has finally agreed on a relief bill to help Americans through this pandemic. But now the House has to agree to the bill and it looks like AOC wants to stop the bill because it doesn’t cover people who are not American citizens.
“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., does not share the enthusiasm Democratic leaders showed toward the coronavirus stimulus bill that the Senate passed this week after extensive negotiations, claiming that the provision that will send money to individuals does not go far enough.
According to the bill, nonresident aliens are not eligible for the payments, which are generally $1,200 for those who file taxes as individuals and $2,400 for those who file jointly.”

“To clarify, $1200 checks are ONLY going to some w/social sec numbers, NOT immigrants w/ tax IDs (ITINs).
Thanks to GOP, these checks will be cut off the backs of *taxpaying immigrants,* who get nothing. Many are essential workers who pay more taxes than Amazon.

I did some research into ITIN. It is NOT a program for illegal aliens. It IS designed for non-citizens living and working in America but do NOT qualify for a SSAN. Specifically, it was created for LEGAL aliens working toward becoming citizens. The number provided tracks the amount the alien earns and taxes paid into SS. Just like for REAL citizens, it determines the amount and kind of SS pay and benefits are accrues once the alien achieves citizenship.
While I may have overlooked the term, I believe the ITIN program is designed specifically for aliens who have a Green Cards that allows them to live and work in America. I did NOT see anywhere, even on the provided application form for ITIN, that allowed illegal aliens to apply for the tax number.
