A Murder Of A Missing Woman Has FINALLY Been Closed After Four Decades…

On January 2, 1983, a tragic incident occurred at a residence located in the Durham neighborhood of then-unincorporated Washington County, Oregon. Nancy McEvers, a 28-year-old wife and mother, was found with a gunshot wound to the head, and she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital. Her husband, Randy McEvers, had called 911 to report that his wife had committed suicide, but upon further investigation, it was clear that something else had occurred.

Initially, Randy provided conflicting accounts of what happened leading up to the shooting, which raised suspicions among detectives, who were brought in to investigate. Evidence and autopsy reports gathered in 1983 indicated that Nancy’s death was not self-inflicted. Randy refused to cooperate with investigators in the months that followed, and the case eventually went cold in August of the same year.

Fast forward to August 2022, and the cold case unit at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office reopened the investigation into Nancy’s death. Over several months, detectives gathered new leads and interviewed over 20 people, including first responders and those who were involved in the original investigation. As a result, several new items of evidence emerged.

In January 2023, detectives finally interviewed Randy, who had been living in Tigard, Oregon. Following the interview, the case was referred to the Washington County District Attorney’s Office for review. However, before the review could take place, Randy took his own life on February 8, 2023, closing the 40-year-old case for good.

While the cause of Nancy’s death will likely never be officially determined, it is clear that her memory will live on through her surviving family members. She is survived by her son, two sisters, and mother.

The case of Nancy McEvers has haunted detectives and family members for decades, and the reopening of the investigation in 2022 brought renewed attention to the case. Despite the tragic ending, the efforts of the cold case unit and forensic experts demonstrate the importance of perseverance and dedication in pursuing justice, no matter how long it may take.
