On Monday, a horrific incident occurred at a Christian elementary school in which six people lost their lives. The perpetrator of this violent act was ultimately stopped by the heroic actions of two Nashville police officers, Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo.
Body camera footage released by the Nashville police shows the officers rushing into the school to locate the suspect. The situation was tense as alarms blared in the background, but the officers remained focused and determined. After searching the first floor, they rushed upstairs and moved in towards the shooter.
Engelbert, who has been with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department for four years, led the way and fired the first shot without hesitation. Collazo, a veteran of nine years, also fired at the suspect, effectively neutralizing the threat.
According to law enforcement instructor Leon Spears, the officers’ actions were “efficient, effective and thorough, plus they were extraordinarily fast with regards to the totality of the event. There was no hesitation and there was no quabbling, it was excellent from the standpoint of technique.”
The footage was slightly edited to blur out one of the victims and the suspect’s dead body. Spears praised the “respectful edits” and the leadership of Nashville police chief John Drake.
Engelbert’s brother, Kevin, described him as a passionate and dedicated officer who has always been a gentle giant and there for those in need. Collazo is also a seasoned officer with years of experience in the field.
Following the incident, Engelbert and Collazo are taking time off in accordance with department protocol. Nashville police continue to investigate the matter and provide information as it becomes available.
