According to the CDC, over 1200 cases of the Corona Virus have been found (/presumed) here in the United States, as of March 12th. The Chinese virus has killed 36 Americans so far and spread to 42 states and Washington D.C. The World Health Organization has declared that the Corona Virus has reached the level of a pandemic. So it is important Americans know more about its ability to spread. A recent study looked into just that and found the virus is pretty resilient.
“A new study suggests that the novel coronavirus COVID-19 can remain in the air for up to three hours, and live on surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel for up to three days.
The research, published in the medRxiv depository, also notes that the virus can remain on copper surfaces for four hours and carboard for up to 24 hours. The research found it could stay on stainless steel and plastic for anywhere between two and three days.”
According to The Journal of Hospital Infections the Corona Virus “can be efficiently inactivated by surface disinfection procedures with 62–71% ethanol, 0.5% hydrogen peroxide or 0.1% sodium hypochlorite within 1 minute. Other biocidal agents such as 0.05–0.2% benzalkonium chloride or 0.02% chlorhexidine digluconate are less effective. As no specific therapies are available for SARS-CoV-2, early containment and prevention of further spread will be crucial to stop the ongoing outbreak and to control this novel infectious thread.”

One meter is about 3 feet and the study claims it is nine days rather than 7 like other viruses. There have also been reports that say you should keep more 3 feet from others, like 5-10ft. So at least 3 feet distance I guess.
Hopefully, with Trump’s additional travel ban, we will see a decrease in the number of cases here in the United States. But as reports continue to come in where the infected have no known contact with an international traveler, this virus is likely much further spread than is being currently reported.
