Vladimir Putin has ordered Russian troops to “maintain peace” in two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, hours after the Russian president recognized Donetsk and Luhansk as independent entities. This means, either Ukraine will have to stand and fight for their land or let it go to Putin—Unless someone intervenes.
In two official decrees, Putin on Monday instructed the country’s defense ministry to assume “the function of maintaining peace” in the eastern regions but I think we all know this can’t end peacefully. It’s a tactic to try and shift the blame of war on Ukraine.
Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan shared the concerning comments regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s potential plans during an interview on NBC’s “Today.”
“We believe that any military operation of the size, scope, and magnitude of what we believe the Russians are planning will be extremely violent. It will cost the lives of Ukrainians and Russians, civilians and military personnel alike,” Sullivan said.
“But we also have intelligence to suggest that there will be an even greater form of brutality because this will not simply be some conventional war between two armies. It will be a war waged by Russia on the Ukrainian people to repress them, to crush them, to harm them,” he added.
Sullivan also argued the U.S. is “prepared to respond decisively if Russia moves on Ukraine,” though diplomatic efforts continue.
