Police will often pull someone over for one charge and during the ticketing process realize that this minor infraction is just the tip of the iceberg. They will find drugs, unregistered weapons, or even learn that the driver has open warrants when they were only pulling the person over for something as minor as not wearing a seatbelt. But when they learn about these other offenses they take action and arrest the driver. So a simple traffic stop can go a long way in helping to keep crime down. But New York A.G. Letitia James claims police need to stop automatically arresting drivers and instead call their supervisors to see if it’s ok. Are you kidding me?
“The New York State Attorney General… recommends cops no longer arrest people during traffic stops if they have certain open warrants, an AG report released Friday states.”
“The vast majority of traffic stops…do not involve criminal conduct, yet the involvement of police in such situations can result in violent interactions.”
“If the NYPD does decide to continue conducting traffic enforcement stops, the AG said officers should not arrest motorists who have low-level warrants, such as a failure to appear on a summons or bench warrants for violations like littering.”
James has also recently filed a lawsuit against the NRA recently and wants the organization to be dissolved. So you can see where she stands on things.
But still, this is an odd stance for an A.G. to take. The police are out there trying to keep the streets safe and A.G. James is telling them that they are causing the violent interactions by doing their jobs and arresting criminals. So the A.G. is on the criminal’s side?
This is New York for you, cutting the NYCPD budget by 1 Billion dollars and now they are being told not to arrest criminals. If I were a cop I would definitely find me a less backward State to work in.
