This has been going on for a while now. China has been flying warplanes into Taiwanese airspace and threatening that it is their country. And it has just been escalating from there. Just earlier this week China was making threats about how they were going to crush anyone that got in their way when it comes to Taiwan. But somehow Biden just made peace with the Chinese President and now, supposedly, China is supposed to back off and the whole situation has been diffused.
“I’ve spoken with Xi about Taiwan. We agree we will abide by the Taiwan agreement. That’s where we are and I made it clear that I don’t think he should be doing anything other than abiding by the agreement,” Biden told reporters.
The Taiwan Relations Act, one of several planks undergirding the current diplomatic relationship between the U.S., China and Taiwan, was passed by Congress in 1979 in order to “maintain peace, security, and stability in the Western Pacific” by maintaining “friendly commercial, cultural, and other relations” between Washington and Taipei.
The law maintains unofficial, nondiplomatic relations between Taiwan and the U.S., allowing for it to be treated as a foreign country without being officially recognized.
It also hinged the establishment of future U.S.-China diplomatic relations on the understanding that Taiwan’s future would be determined peacefully.”
I am not sure what kind of black magic was used here but this whole situation just took a 360. We were practically on the brink of war when it came to the China-Tawian conflict and now after a quick chat with China, Biden claims we are good again? Was anyone else on he phone that can confirm this actually happened? I want to believe Dementia Joe here, but I have my doubts considering the last couple of months. The quick change, if true, begs the question what deal did we just make?
