This Deli Put Out A Sign, And Immediately Got Flooded With Bad Reviews…

Many people lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic’s severe effects, and many businesses were forced to close or adjust to the restrictions, which had an adverse effect on their finances. But now that the restrictions are being lifted, businesses now are reopening their doors.

However, oddly enough, they are having trouble hiring staff. Despite the fact that a large number of people lost their jobs, economists still claim that there is a labor shortage; as the data shows that there are more open positions than there are applicants.

Therefore, in order to attract customers, businesses must become imaginative and distinctive. However, a Florida deli that posted a sign outlining the expected pay for each position failed miserably because the descriptions of the positions were too general to be helpful to potential employees.

The Melbourne, Florida-based store had a hiring sign that described minimum wage workers as “mediocre person.” Not only that, the pay scale set absurd standards for workers at various pay levels. The deli has received a deluge of unfavorable Google reviews since going viral.

Although the minimum wage has generally increased over time, public opinion has not.

“Now hiring all positions, Minimum wage equals mediocre person,” the Jason’s Deli sign stated.

Qualifications for workers depending on how much money they are going to earn per hour if they’re hired to work at the deli have been outlined in the sign.

  • $10 per hour is paid to someone with “some experience” who is “efficient” at work.
  • $11 per hour is offered to someone who is “reliable” and a “multi-tasker.”
  • $12 per hour is paid to an employee who is “better than most” and “brings zero drama” while “working like two people.”
  • $13 per hour is offered to someone who is quote as “supervisory material.”
  • $14 per hour is given to an employee who is “never, ever late, cares as the owner does,” and always “brings positivity to the environment.”
  • $15 per hour is given to someone who “outshines and outperforms the owner” while they do “all of the above” on the other job levels.

Twitter user I.G.Y. Azalea shared a photo on Twitter of a sign at Jason’s Deli in Melbourne, Florida. In the caption, they expressed that it really didn’t sit right with them. “Jason’s Deli in Melbourne, FL if anybody felt like letting them know how much this sucks a**.”

“Saw this (offensive sign) at a deli in town. This realllllly doesn’t sit right with me,” Azalea also wrote.

The tweet went viral with 73,000 users on Twitter concurring that this sign was inappropriate and was shared by 6,300 more people, and 5,5000 people quoted it in other tweets.

Here are some comments from folks online:

“Math skills questionable. E.g., if someone is ‘better than most, works like two people,’ shouldn’t he get more than twice the starting wage, not just 1 1/3 times? Also, if he ‘outshines and outperforms the owner’ and if capitalism is a meritocracy, shouldn’t he be given the deli?”

“This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. How are you supposed to survive off of $15/hr working at a deli?”

“Just because someone works hard doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a livable wage.”
