Seattle Is Losing Police Faster Than They Can Defund Them

The Defund the Police movement seems to have died down in most parts of the nation and many cities are now regretting the decision to cut police funding as crime skyrockets. But that’s not stopping Seattle from cutting almost 20% of the police budget. I guess these Libs can’t learn from each other.

The council, in an 8-1 vote to retool Mayor Jenny Durkan’s 2021 budget with changes of their own, opted to cut the police budget by just under 20 percent.

Minutes after the vote, Durkan issued a statement indicating that she will sign the legislation, ending any speculation of a mayoral veto.

“I applaud the City Council for taking a more deliberate and measured approach to the 2021 Seattle Police Department budget than occurred this summer, which led to the resignation of former SPD Chief Carmen Best,” Durkand said.

“Defund police by 50 percent was a slogan, and it was an empty and misleading slogan,” said Councilwoman Debra Juarez, one of two council members who did not make the 50 percent pledge. “It caused damage, it caused pain, it caused trauma, it caused anger.”

Councilwoman Kshama Sawant applauded the council’s move.

“Every reduction in the bloated police budget reflects a real tangible victory in the movement,” Sawant said.”

Such a move will leave many vacant jobs on the force unfilled and require 911 dispatchers and parking enforcement to be moved outside of SPD jurisdiction. As of Oct. 31, 134 officers have left the force, according to the mayor’s office. In October alone, 23 have thrown in the towel.”

Minneapolis is now begging for police aid from neighboring cities after they cut the police budget by $1.5 million.  So what is Seattle thinking here? Crime rates have been skyrocketing in these blue cities that decided to cut police budgets. But I guess pandering to the BLM and Defund the Police movement seems to be somehow more important than the welfare of their constituents.
